Music Mentoring
Most people call them private lessons, but I prefer the term “mentoring” because it better reflects the partnerships I build with my students. Being a competent musician is about more than just proficiency on your instrument; using my extensive experience as an educator and an active musician, I guide students of all ages in setting and achieving goals that are appropriate for them.
Foundational Music Mentoring
These in-person sessions provide a 1:1 focus in a few key areas that can help beginning musicians build a solid foundation, elevating their experience in school band—which could mean the difference between a passing experience and a lifelong skill.
General Music Mentoring
Virtual or in-person, these 1:1 sessions can help students reach their goals in an efficient way. Our time may not always be spent working on things specific to your instrument (though it will usually include that); it can also include music theory, the philosophy of music, music appreciation, and more—depending on your goals and interests. Together, we’ll chart the path, and I’ll provide resources, ideas, projects, inspiration, and accountability for your journey.
A few other things I do.
My parents sent me off to college as a music major with one piece of advice:
“pick up some other skills along the way!”
Music Preparation
From copying your handwritten scores into Sibelius, to making your digital scores performance-ready, I am a competent and reliable music engraver/copyist with decades of experience (including work for major music publishers as well as film scores).
Charting & Arranging
For Horn Sections
As chief copyist & arranger for several of the bands I play in, alongside 13+ years of making arrangements for student ensembles, I’ve become skilled at transcribing, writing, and arranging for horn sections in a variety of genres.
Transcriptions
Getting music that exists in audio form (live or recorded) into sheet music form so others can read & play it is the name of the game here. Whether it’s a lead sheet so your bandmates are on the same page about an arrangement, or a transcription of an original song you wrote, I can help you create the sheet music you need.
Curriculum & Program design
After spending 13 years as a classroom teacher in an independent school, I have extensive experience developing curriculum and mapping larger scale programs. Music programs and personal development are my specialties, and while I am no longer in the classroom on a daily basis, I take great joy in creating curriculum for other educators to deliver.
About Me
I’m a mixed-Black, queer musician and educator who is comfortable with any pronoun as long as it’s used respectfully.
I learned to play the trumpet in 5th-grade band, igniting a deep passion for music, which inspired a lifelong pursuit of diverse musical experiences. After playing various instruments in a wide range of ensembles throughout high school, I brought my focus back to the trumpet, studying music at Western Washington University. From there, I went on to earn a master’s degree in orchestral studies from New England Conservatory of Music and launched a professional performance career in the northeast. I played in diverse settings from symphony orchestras and musical theatre pit orchestras to big bands and recording studios; along the way, I also worked as a music copyist for film scores and major music publishers, and I had several stints as a music librarian for festivals and universities.
Upon returning home to Seattle in 2007, weary of the intense singular focus on trumpet playing, I retired as a professional trumpet player and returned to my multi-instrumentalist roots. Reemerging as low brass player, I began playing trombone, euphonium, and tuba in orchestras, big bands, funk/rock bands, and chamber ensembles. I’ve been playing guitar and bass since the early 1990’s and spent the pandemic adding the banjo to my musical toolbox!
I have taught private lessons for decades and developed a comprehensive 6-12th grade music curriculum during my 13 years as a band director at a small independent school in Seattle. Recently, I’ve been writing curriculum for music and personal development programs at local non-profit organizations and independent schools.
